Mid-March, one month from first harvest of 2013

We are a month from the start of our 2013 season. As usual this time of year is tricky. Our kale and sprouting broccoli is beautiful right now 🙁 meaning it will likely be past it’s glory for our first harvests. The lettuce and peas are coming along as are the radishes. With this unseasonably warm weather we are tempted to plant outside, but a note in our farm journal warns of this folly. We may forge ahead with early potatoes and spinach and take our chances this weekend. We got some help from the environmental AP class at Liberty High School yesterday and pulled all the old irrigation pipes and tomato supports. So now a large portion of the field is ready to till.

We had twin lambs born 2 days ago, so far so good, the sheep and goats are quite late this year. We have many does (I am scared to count) ready to kid, but not one baby yet and we are in mid March! Maybe they will come for spring break when our kids are around to help.

Make sure you have the opening potluck on your calendar for April 14th from 3-6 pm. Check out the online magazine highlighting Helvetia and our CSA at http://bit.ly/VHBeEL . Pass on the link to your friends.

We are almost at capacity for teh 2013 season, so those who are interested but not committed yet need to get their deposit in this week
