Kidding season is officially over. Last night our last doe delivered twins, a beautiful buck and doe. Their mom is new and ignoring them so we are struggling to get her to understand her new job. The final count is 31 kids (that is a record). The ewes are starting to deliver but about half are still left to lamb. The weather has been uncooperative this season as it is too wet to transplant into the field the broccoli sits squished in their flats as we wait for it to dry out. Juve has gotten half of the bows up for the new greenhouse. It is probably a few days to weeks off from being covered space, but we are very excited to know we’ll have an additional 3000 square feet of dry earth to plant in.
The tiny lettuces we planted a few weeks back at least look like lettuce now as does the spinach, arugula and mizuna. With a few good weeks of sun (ha!) we will be ready to harvest for the 15th of April. This is the time of year we always ask ourselves why we start in April? Then we look at the shallots, winter squash, kale and sprouting broccoli and remember there are quite a few nice items to get us started with.
We will have pork, beef, and lamb available in the fall. It is time to let us know what you want and to make a deposit. Final price per pound is not quite finalized but will be about $3.25/# beef and pork and $4.50 for lamb. Pork is sold by the half (100 – 150# meat per half), Beef by the ¼ or ½ (100 # per ¼), lamb is sold as a whole (35-50#). Juvencio wants a deposit of $100 to reserve your meat along with a note letting him know what you want. Any questions please don’t hesitate to email(lynjuve@msn.com) or call Juve at 503-830-0342.
We still have about 10 openings for the 2012 season. There are many people with interest but not many following through. Please let your friends know now is the time to become a member of our community. We find our members are the best at finding new members that stick with the CSA.
The opening potluck is set for April 15th 3-6 rain or shine. We will have the pizza oven fired up, farm tours, square dancing, and fun for all. Save the date. The first harvest is set for April 16 and 19. The pick-up date assignments will be sent out within the next week for your final approval.
